SAGAN MITCHELL
Rockford, IL
For Sagan Mitchell, art is a way of life. It’s been an outlet, a passion, and something they’ve been able to grow and develop over the years.
Using lots of color and expression in their paintings, Sagan is ready to display their work on the DEVIATE stage. You won’t want to miss their incredible pieces on September 28 in downtown Beloit.
Tell us about you.
I've been making art on my own since I was a kid, it's always been something I have to do. Starting as an outlet for emotions coming from an extreme religious household, it developed into an enormous passion of mine. I'm 27 years old, and have dabbled in every medium I can, but painting, drawing, and sculpting are what I've really latched onto. I'm a portrait artist as my main source of income. My other passions include body mods, my snakes, and my tarantulas.
What inspires your art?
A lot of it comes from a place of emotional expression and processing my complicated relationship with religion (as I mentioned before I grew up in an extreme form of it). Other inspirations come from a love of anatomy and the innate horror of the body. Most of my non-commissioned work has to do with some sort of body horror. I love to use a lot of color and expression in my work, especially painting.
Knowing DEVIATE is an experiential, interactive art event, how do you envision participating and building your booth?
I'd probably choose to display my original work alongside prints, potentially some of my dolls as well. Ideally, I'd like to focus on original works I've already completed. I think I have a very unique vision and style that would fit in and stand out, my work comes from a place of expression that I have worked hard to create, and I think I would bring a style to the table that could only come from my perspective and lived experiences.
